I am one day away from leaving to fly to Nepal and prepare to trek to Everest Base Camp. I am excited and a little bit anxious to really see if I have the ability to make it all the way to over 17,500′ and Everest Base Camp. I began planning this trip a couple of years ago and have pushed the trip off twice and as they say, third time is a charm, so Nepal, here I come.
Several years ago a walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain and many asked why I would want to do that. But as I talked to people about this trek to EBC, the question has not really been asked why, but most say the statement of “wow”, so I believe we all have a sense of adventure and when Mt. Everest is mentioned, that sense of adventure really kicks into gear. But to answer the unasked question I really believe that there is a part of me that wants to challenge my mind and body to go do more than the normal, not to place myself in harms way, but to test and push the limits we all perceive that we have. This is one of those items that will test me….
I hope to blog most days on this trip, the same as I did on the Camino in Spain. I will try to give you glimpses of my challenges, thoughts, worries and thrills as I trek. I will also try to give you a look at the exotic places where I will be trekking.
My route:
1. Fly Amarillo to Dallas (yes, when I die and go to Heaven, I have to go through Dallas)
2. Fly Dallas to Kathmandu Nepal (thru Doha Qatar)
3. An extra day in Kathmandu
4. Fly to Lukla, Nepal (you might want to google flying into Lukla)
5. Trek 9 days from Lukla to Everest Base Camp (17,598′)
6. Trek to top of Kala Patthar (18,208′ sunrise view of Mt. Everest)
7. Trek 5 days back down to Lukla
8. Back to Kathmandu and home (thru Dallas)
Remember, in Nepal and the Khumba region where the Himalayan Mountains are is the home of the Yeti. I will attempt to catch one on my camera, but will be very careful to not get too close.
