Day 7 – Pamplona to Puente La Reina
24k – 92k to date
Today was a beautiful day to walk. As I left Pamplona to the east, before exiting, I saw more of beautiful city with large parks and open areas, all perfectly maintained, with many people out walking and jogging. As I neared the east edge of the city, there were three university campuses, one looked like a major public university, the second a smaller Catholic school and maybe what we would consider a junior college. From there, just few kilometers is a bedroom community that is nice and modern, but had a very distinctive castle on a hill to the side.
The highlight of today was climbing to Alto de Perdon, nothing more than a small mountain ridge that has wind towers. On the ridge, the wind company had placed large metal cutouts of medieval plilgrims, with the inscription ”Where the way of the wind meets the way of the stars”. It is iconic for the Camino. I also must say, that ridge and the next 5k was the windiest place I have ever been! From there, I had a 2k downhill trek through, what I would describe as a dry river bed, that was a dangerous time. Bicyclist don’t take that route, they follow a road. Then it was just a long slog to the night’s hostel in Puerto la Reina.
I stayed at the municipal hostel and while, full, it was very comfortable. I am begining to establish my routine. That routine doesn’t allow enough hours in the day. I origianally thought I would have tons of time to do everything, even read a book or two. I haven’t opened the kindle app yet!
